Medical billers and coders play an important behind-the-scenes role in the health care system. For example, imagine a patient who makes an appointment to visit his doctor because he’s feeling excessively tired. The doctor examines him and orders several tests.
The biller or coder who works in the doctor’s office must assign a code to each test. Thanks to these codes, the process of communication between the doctor and the patient’s insurance company goes smoothly. Why is that so important? If the codes are wrong, the insurance company might not pay the patient’s bill.
